Devil Winds

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

Legend has it the devil rules sound. When the hot winter winds roar across Southern California it is hell. The wind might be Maryia on any given day but these blisterers are called the Santa Ana Winds. Until you have experienced them it’s hard to grasp the effect they have on all living things. Whack-o could sum it up. The horses look as if they had been blasted by massive hair dryers set on scorch. Their fur and hair stands straight out and dust sticks to them with static elecricity. No matter what color, they all look like Duns. We are talking wild and crazy, that’s how every thing gets. You can be standing in a realitively calm spot and fifteen feet away a gust will snap a tree limb right off with a loud whirring. Woo-hoo. There will be no sane person out riding at these times. Should you be up for a bit of craziness, you best strap on those goggles as the flying debris add a new demention to riding by feel. You’ll wish you saved that lesson for different day in paradise. Good time to mix and serve the herd a big mash and keep them hydrated, you too.
